What do Engineers do?
Engineers work to design, make, and improve things to solve problems and benefit society. They do a wide variety of work, from designing and building bridges to making business deals and researching new methods of making things.
What are the different types of Engineering?
No list can be all inclusive, but the following is a start on the different types of engineers.
Aerospace Engineers design, analyze, and produce, and occasionally install components that make up aircraft, spacecraft, high-altitude vehicles, and missiles.
Agricultural Engineers
Biomedical Engineers
Chemical Engineers work to turn recent advances in chemistry into products. They work in many different areas of industry and with a wide range of people.
Civil Engineers are the ones that create cities, they design, plan, and build roads, bridges, building, and other types of infrastructure.
Communications Engineers
Computer Engineers work with computer systems. They help companies network their computers and keep the networks running smoothly, they also help determine what technical direction the company should take.
Control Systems Engineers
Electrical Engineers design chips for VCRs, stereos, radios and anything electrical that you can think of. They also work with quantum electronics, acoustics, signal processing, and ferroelectrics and are on the cutting edge of technology.
Environmental Engineers
Geotechnical Engineers
Industrial Engineers work with companies to determine how they should allocate resources and the best usage of physical resources. A large percent work with manufacturing companies and specialize in a specific area.
Management/Economics Engineers
Manufacturing Engineers
Materials Engineers design new materials and new processes for making materials. They also select and apply existing materials to solve design problems.
Mechanical Engineers
Mining Engineers
Nuclear Engineers work to optimize the output of nuclear plants and also work in research in atomic research facilities.
Ocean Engineers
Optical Engineers
Petroleum Engineers
Robotics Engineers design and make robots. They work to develop new uses and abilities for robots and also work with companies to design robots to fit the companies needs.
Sanitary Engineers
Structural Engineers are responsible for making sure buildings and other structures are safe and meet the required codes.
Transportation Engineers plan, design, and upgrade streets, highways, railroads, airports, and other transit and transportation systems.
